Sound Discoveries Presents: Henna
A Global Arts Lecture & Workshop
Joslyn Hall Auditorium (Lecture)
McGee 205 (Workshop)
Carteret Community College Foundation's Sound Discoveries series is excited to present Henna: A Global Arts Lecture & Workshop, a UNC "Humanities on the Road" learning event offering a quick—but meaningful—deep dive into Islamic art and culture, with a special focus on the ethnobotany and cultural context of henna.
This evening of learning and art features guest speakers Dr. Micah Hughes (Associate Director for UNC's Center for Middle East & Islamic Studies) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Nadia Elhag (North Carolina henna artist). Together, they will explore henna’s historical, artistic, and cultural significance across the Islamic world, connecting visual art, tradition, and lived cultural practice. Then, an exclusive workshop where participants will help to make henna, practice drawing designs, and then be able to apply it to themselves and others!
The lecture portion is open to the public and welcomes all who are interested in global arts and culture. Following the lecture, participants may take part in a FREE "hands"-on henna workshop, which is limited to approximately 25 participants and requires advance registration.
